Santa Monica, CA (March 27, 2025): Patexia, a leader in patent and IP intelligence, is proud to announce the release of its highly anticipated 2025 Patent Intelligence Report, offering an in-depth look into the evolving patent landscape. This year’s report uncovers several key insights, including a milestone in 2024, when patents granted to foreign entities accounted for 50.5% of all patents granted by the USPTO. Additionally, the report highlights a reversal of the previous declining trend, with an increase in overall patent grants in 2024. These insights, along with detailed rankings, lateral move opportunities, and a comprehensive analysis of industry performance, provide valuable data for stakeholders to adapt to the ever-evolving patent ecosystem.

Key Findings from the 2025 Patent Intelligence Report:

  • Patent Activity (2020-2024): A total of 1,848,450 patents were granted from 2020 to 2024, with 2,215,201 patent applications either issued or abandoned.
  • Overall Patent Growth: A 4.58% increase in patents issued in 2024 compared to 2023, signaling a rebound in patent activity.
  • Top U.S. States and Cities: Detailed data on top U.S. states and cities based on inventor activity, providing insights into regional innovation hubs.
  • Foreign Filings: Japan led foreign filings, accounting for 12.10% of total grants, followed by China at 9.65%.
  • Saudi Arabia’s Innovation Growth: Saudi Arabia recorded the highest year-over-year growth rate of 19.34%, reflecting its expanding focus on innovation.
  • Industry Rankings: The report includes rankings of the top 2,000 companies, law firms, and attorneys, offering a comprehensive view of the most active players in the patent ecosystem.
  • Lateral Moves: 60 attorneys from the top 2,000 changed law firms in the past year, highlighting the dynamic nature of the IP profession.
  • Growing and Declining Entities: The report identifies the top-growing and declining firms and companies, offering a snapshot of shifting industry dynamics.

“The 2025 Patent Intelligence Report arrives at a key moment in the patent ecosystem, coinciding with a transition in leadership at the USPTO with Kathy Vidal stepping down and the new nominee taking office,” said Pedram Sameni, CEO at Patexia. “At the same time, we’re seeing a significant rise in foreign patent filings, which may prompt U.S. companies to boost their research and development efforts to maintain their competitive edge. This increase in global patent activity signals not only heightened competition but also potential implications for patent litigation and innovation strategies in the years ahead.”
