Patexia Releases 2025 Trademark Intelligence Report: Filings Increase, China Leads Foreign Applicants

Santa Monica, CA (April 24, 2025): Patexia, a leading IP analytics and legal intelligence platform, today announced the release of its 2025 Trademark Intelligence Report, offering a comprehensive five-year analysis of U.S. trademark activity. This study offers rankings, statistics, and key insights into trademark prosecution, providing a detailed evaluation of the activity and performance of applicants, law firms, and attorneys.

Over the past five years, trademark filings at the USPTO have experienced sharp fluctuations, influenced in part by increases in foreign applications and evolving market dynamics. In response, the USPTO has implemented several measures, most notably through the Trademark Modernization Act, to enhance the integrity and efficiency of the registration process. As the office now undergoes a leadership transition, these ongoing changes mark a key moment for the future of trademark prosecution in the United States.

Covering a five-year window from January 1, 2020, through December 31, 2024, this year’s report provides an in-depth examination of trademark activity at the USPTO. It analyzes 3,039,838 trademark applications filed by over 220,061 domestic and international entities, with representation from more than 23,104 firms and 31,618 attorneys. The study breaks down critical metrics such as filings, registrations, renewals, abandonments, cancellations, office actions, and pendency rates. It also captures shifts in global trademark activity, highlighting both increasing and declining foreign filers. This edition also explores top lateral attorney moves and the year-over-year activity shifts of leading companies and firms. By combining activity metrics with an evaluation of registration success, we have assessed and ranked all key stakeholders. The report features detailed performance data for the top 2,000 trademark attorneys, law firms, and companies, offering valuable insights into those driving trademark prosecution at the USPTO.

Highlights of the report include:

  • Trademark Activity Overview (2020–2024): The USPTO saw 3,039,838 trademark applications filed over the past five years, resulting in 1,672,553 registrations and 1,066,330 abandonments. During the same period, 428,211 marks were renewed, while 953,616 were canceled, offering a comprehensive view of trademark lifecycles in the U.S., including registration rates, pendency, office actions, extensions, and more.
  • Stakeholders Analyzed and Ranked: The report evaluates 220,061 trademark applicants (companies), 23,104 trademark law firms, and 31,618 trademark attorneys, providing performance and activity rankings for the top 2,000 entities in each category based on detailed prosecution data.
  • Foreign and Domestic Activity: Insights into trademark activity from domestic and foreign entities, with a special focus on the top countries contributing to the U.S. trademark landscape.

“Following a temporary dip in 2022 and 2023, trademark filings increased again in 2024, fueled by renewed activity from Chinese applicants, according to our analysis,” said Pedram Sameni, CEO of Patexia. “Our data suggests that recent USPTO reforms and measures, including the Trademark Modernization Act, have influenced filing, registration, and abandonment trends over the past half-decade, amid consistently strong global demand for brand protection in the U.S. In today’s competitive landscape, staying informed about trademark trends and understanding how companies, law firms, and attorneys perform has become essential for strategic brand protection and legal representation. This report offers the critical insights and rankings needed to succeed in this environment.”
