Patexia Releases Fourth Annual Patent Prosecution Intelligence Report and Rankings

Patexia’s 2022 Patent Prosecution Intelligence Report provides various statistics, revenue data, expenses and comprehensive analysis and rankings of all stakeholders in patent prosecution including attorneys and agents.

Santa Monica, CA (April 21, 2022): Today, Patexia, Inc., an intellectual property company and global IP community, is proud to announce the release of its fourth annual Patent Prosecution Intelligence Report as part of its Patexia Insights series.

Corporations often struggle to measure and compare the performance of their outside patent counsel.  We have evaluated all patent firms using our proven methodology and looked into patent statistics, best patent prosecution practices, activity of companies and law firms, and analyzed technology centers and art units. For the first time this year we have also evaluated more than 27000 registered patent attorneys and agents and have ranked them. Thanks to the Patexia Data Science team that automated the data extraction from the USPTO Public PAIR.

Our corporate clients use this report to evaluate their current counsel or find a new counsel for their patent work. We have looked at about 1.8 million utility patents and more than 2.3 million utility applications issued or abandoned from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2021. Our number-driven rankings can also be utilized by law firms for marketing as well as business development.  The report covers the top 1,000 most active law firms and companies as well as more than 2500 most active patent attorneys and agents.

This year, we evaluated:

  • 2,356,882 Applications
  • 1,823,414 Patents
  • 27,628,604 Claims
  • 117,772 Assignees
  • 3,591 Patent Firms
  • 27,084 Registered Patent Attorneys and agents

In addition, we have provided useful data for the entities  including:

  • The estimated 5-year patent revenue generated by attorneys or agents
  • The estimated 5-year patent revenue generated by patent firms
  • The estimated 5-year spending on US patent prosecution by corporations including the law firm fees, the USPTO fees and the US patent portfolio maintenance.
  • The top three clients for each of the attorneys/agents and the volume of work handled for each
  • The top three clients for each of the law firms and the volume of work handled for each
  • The top three law firms handling patent prosecution for each of the corporations and the volume of work handled by each firm.

The report measures the overall performance of stakeholders by activity, success, quality, efficiency, and cost. We have separately looked at the Best Performing and Most Active law firms, companies and attorneys overall, as well as in the High-Tech, and Bio-Tech sectors to identify the top 100 in each category. The report is accompanied with Excel sheets for easy access to extended dataset including various metrics and rankings. We hope this report help the companies in making better data-driven decisions. There are more than 3,500 law firms in the patent prosecution practice. This  independent third party rankings and data will also help the law firms and attorneys to market themselves as well as make the right decisions when expanding their practice.

Pedram Sameni, the company’s CEO relayed the following: “We are excited to add attorney-level data. This is the first time that we or arguably any company has done attorney-level evaluation. This required massive data analysis that was buried in millions of PDF documents but thanks to our data science team, we were able to uncover and extract them”. He further added: “This additional layer of information now enables both companies and law firms to evaluate their patent attorneys even if they are working for the same firm”.
