Patexia Releases Second Annual Trademark Prosecution Intelligence Report and Rankings

Patexia’s 2022 Trademark Prosecution Intelligence Report provides rankings, statistics, revenue, spending and comprehensive analysis of all stakeholders in trademark prosecution including applicants, law firms and attorneys.

Santa Monica, CA (May 26, 2022): Today, Patexia, Inc., an intellectual property company and global IP community, is proud to announce the release of its second annual Trademark Prosecution Intelligence Report in an effort to map the trademark prosecution landscape and offer insights into levels of activity, performance and trends, among other important topics.

The U.S. trademark activity has  continued to remain high as the number of applicants, especially those coming from foreign countries including China has increased in recent years. Our data shows a larger number of attorneys who are active before the USPTO and work on trademark applications. This makes the preparation of this report more complicated compared to other ones, as data clean-up requires more manual work.

The report covers the activity and performance of all stakeholders for a 5-year period from January 1, 2017, through December 31, 2021. For this report, we have evaluated:

  • 2,848,988 trademark applications
  • 201,467 U.S. and foreign trademark applicants
  • 28,217 trademark firms
  • 33,578 trademark attorneys

Furthermore, we have provided these unique datasets in this report:

  • The estimated 5-year trademark revenue generated by trademark firms
  • The estimated 5-year trademark revenue generated by trademark attorneys
  • The estimated 5-year spending on US trademark prosecution by trademark applicants (corporations) including the law firm fees, and the USPTO fees
  • The top three clients for each of the trademark firms and the volume of work handled for each
  • The top three trademark firms, handling trademark prosecution for each of the corporations and the volume of work handled by each firm.
  • The list of the top lateral moves that took place since the publication of our last trademark report. .

When asked about this release, Pedram Sameni, the company’s CEO, relayed the following, “US trademark applications slightly declined in 2021 but the activity remained quite high compared to several years ago, with close to 700,000 applications for the second year in a row. An unusual filing activity has been observed coming from the Chinese applicants and this too has an impact on the wait time”. He further added: “We hope that this report continues to provide useful insights into this rapidly changing sector, while becoming a useful tool in helping companies and trademark applicants who are looking for  the right counsel for their trademark needs”.
